Superstitions: Engagement & Marriage

MarriageNo doubt some of you will have had wedding invites drop through the post for this summer’s nuptial season…

But just what superstitions are there surrounding getting engaged and getting married?

  • In time gone by, where a couple met would have had an impact on the success of their union. For example, hillsides were considered to be very lucky, if that hillside was near moving water then that would make the situation even better.
  • Meeting in the heart of woods would mean a relationship would be constant forever, but conversely if Poplar trees were nearby then bad luck would be bestowed on the lovers.

Serena has dominated women’s tennis for quite some time, she is the world’s number 1 ranking player, having taken her 23rd Grand Slam title in January 2017 at the Australian Open.

In fact, keen fans worked out that it is likely she was pregnant when she got that 23rd title, having announced that she is pregnant and expecting an autumn baby.

Serena is 35 years old and is expecting her first child with her fiancé Alexis Ohanian who is a Reddit Tech Entrepreneur. Apparently, they have said that they would like to not know the baby’s gender until the birth.

Of course, her pregnancy has put a halt to her playing tennis for the rest of 2017, but she is said to already be making plans for her come back. Whilst many might have expected her to retire from professional tennis following the baby’s arrival, she is said to be keen to continue competing as long as she believes that she can challenge and ultimately win Grand Slams. Superstitions: New Year

Happy New Year 2017New Year falls on different dates for different countries and religions. But in all cases there is a great significance on the fact that how it is started will be an omen for how the rest of the year will pan out. So not surprisingly there are a number of rituals that people follow at this time of year.

Do you do any of these?

  • Red envelopes are given to children in China as part of their New Year celebrations; the envelopes contain money and are seen as lucky. The activity is carried out to bring that child success and wealth in the coming year.
  • An old superstition is that something must come into the house before something leaves on New Year’s Day. This was often achieved by leaving a candle burning during New Year’s Eve until the next day. In those days the need for light, heat and cooking fuel for the whole year were paramount and so rituals focussed on achieving that.

Superstitions

Black Cat SuperstitionIf I say ‘superstition’ the chances are you will immediately think of something that you do that falls into this category. Do you refuse to walk under a ladder? Do you stop in the street to pick up a lost penny, believing it will bring you good luck? Do you throw salt over your shoulder if you spill some?

The question is are you really superstitious? Do you believe something bad will happen if you don’t carry out these rituals? Or is it a learned behaviour and now just something that you do? (more…)

Collateral Beauty

Collateral Beauty Movie PosterUnusually for a big film with a star-studded cast there hasn’t been a huge amount of information released about the movie – Collateral Beauty, which is out in the UK on the 26th December, but from what I have read I think it is set to be a poignant tear-jerker.

Will Smith plays a once-successful businessman, having suffered a terribly personal tragedy; he falls into a deep depression. His friends played by Edward Norton, Kate Winslet and Michael Peña  rally around him, but even with their support and a passing of time he is unable to move forward. At this point with no clue as to what to do, he begins to write things down. He writes letters, but they are not too anybody, but are written in the abstract to things like ‘time’, ‘love’ and ‘death’.

The surprising twist in the film without giving too much away is that they write back! Helen Mirren plays death, Jacob Latimore is time and Keira Knightley stands for love… (more…)

Tarot Spreads

Psychic Tarot ReaderIf you are fairly new to Tarot readings, you may not realise that there are many different ways that the cards can be dealt (spreads) in order to determine the style of reading. For example:

The Horseshoe

This spread is made up of seven cards, laid out from left (1) to right (7) in the shape of a horseshoe.

Card 1 looks at what in the past is influencing you.

Card 2 deals with the present.

Card 3 looks at whether there are any hidden influences.

Card 4 identifies blocks that are stopping you moving forward.

Card 5 looks at external influences.

Card 6 reviews the best way forward.

Card 7 identifies the likely outcome. (more…)

Autumn Albums

Melanie C (Spice Girls)Greetings pop-pickers!

If you are of a certain age, you could be forgiven for thinking we have gone back in time when you look at some of the top album releases this autumn. Of course, we have to use the word ‘Album’ as some people under that age may not necessarily know what an ‘L.P’ is, nor may they understand queuing to buy the latest ‘record’ at a Virgin Megastore or even Woolworths!

Here’s our pick of the pops:

Our cover star – Melanie C puts out her new album titled ‘Version of Me’ on the 21st October 2016. This is actually her seventh album and contains the single ‘Anymore’ that was released in September. “I wanted to make an album that I would listen to now,” says Melanie. I’m not a leftfield artist, I never will be. I write pop songs, but my aim this time was to approach every aspect of them differently, to be more creative with structure and sounds. Whatever felt right, I went with.” (more…)

Autumn TV

Tess Daly Featureflash Photo Agency / Shutterstock.comAutumn is signified by many things – the nights draw in, the woolly tights scarves and gloves have to be found, the central heating gets clicked on, round tins of sweets arrive in the shops and of course television. Yes, a guilty pleasure for many of us up and down the country will be getting home from work, eating some comfort food (sausages & mash anyone?) and putting on PJ’s early and settling down to watch some good old fashioned TV.

Well by the time you read this some programmes will have already started – Strictly Come Dancing (partly presented by our cover star – Tess Daly), The X Factor, Poldark, Victoria and comedy remakes – Are You Being Served? and Goodnight Sweetheart to name a few.

But there is still more autumn viewing coming that will bring brightness into your lives as the seasons leaves turn a different shade of colour outside:

Westworld

This is a new series and the executive producer is JJ Abrams who successfully rebooted the Star Wars and Star Trek franchises. The cast is weighty – including Anthony Hopkins, Ed Harris and Thandie Newton. The programme has a Sci-Fi flavour as a remake of Michael Chrichton’s film in1973 about a theme park run by robots that go haywire. Sky Atlantic – Oct 16 (more…)

Bridget Jones’s Baby

Bridget Jones's Baby Universal PicturesHelen Fielding (the writer of Bridget Jones), recently said “At heart Bridget Jones is about the gap between how we all feel we’re expected to be and how we actually are…” That quote really sums up in a nutshell why the books and films have been so popular – on some level we are all able to relate to Bridget Jones and the predicaments she finds herself in.

What we know so far…

The latest instalment is likely to be no different – its ten years on, and as Bridget says “Many positive things to note…”, she has a top job as a producer on a news programme, she has a cordial relationship with her ex (Mark Darcy), she’s got great friends, a good social life going to festivals amongst other things and oh yes – she’s pregnant!

The trailers give away the fact one of her exes is back – Mark Darcy played by Colin Firth, but there is a noticeable absence of Hugh Grant who played her other love interest in the previous films as Daniel Cleaver. But don’t worry there is a new lovable rogue to take his place in the form of Grey’s Anatomy’s McDreamy – Patrick Dempsey who plays billionaire Jack Qwant. (more…)
