In the spirit of Halloween I thought I would explore what we mean by White Witch: White witch or good witch really distinguish practitioners of folk magic for benevolent purposes termed white magic as opposed to those practising malevolent witchcraft.
Two of the most famous white witches in modern literature are Glinda – the Good Witch in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum, and Queen Jadis from The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S Lewis.
In early modern Europe, practitioners of folk magic did not see themselves as witches, but as healers or seers. Historically healers and diviners were accused of witchcraft, when in fact they considered themselves to be mediators between the mundane and the spiritual worlds. They described contact with fairies, and spirits of the dead and travelling through realms of another world.
The term ‘witch’ was also used to describe cunning folk – “wise man” or “cunning-man”. The word witch was also interchangeable with “white”, “good”, “blessers”, “wizards” and “sorcerers”. While cunning-folk could command respect, but the public were often fearful, believing many were just as capable of harming as of healing. In particular in England, France and Hungary many such healers and wise men and women were convicted of witchcraft.
In much of Europe, folklore explicitly describes accused witches in central and southern Europe of participation in processions of the dead or large feasts, often presided over by a female divinity who teaches magic and gives prophecies; and participation in battles against evil spirits, ‘vampires’ or ‘witches’ to win fertility and prosperity for the community.
