The ongoing pandemic has created a very uncertain time, leaving us not knowing what is going to happen from one week to the next, never mind three months, or a year from now. But, having a vision for our future can be very grounding, it is important now, more than ever that we do not lose sight of what we want for our lives. Equally these situations teach us that time is of the essence, and we should be taking steps towards our goals and securing happiness in our lives now and in the future.
You may very well use vision techniques at work, perhaps you have responsibility of realising projects to a conclusion. However, not everyone approaches their personal life and happiness with the same precision…
Your Future Life
Having a vision of what you want your future life to look like, helps you to keep things in perspective. You won’t get so hung up on small set-backs as long as overall you can see you are taking strides towards your end goals.
A vision for the future is a medium-term planning event, for example 3 years long. To develop your plan, it can be helpful to imagine yourself in the future looking back at this moment and what you would have wanted to say to yourself.
If you are not sure where to start, you may find it easier to break up each aspect of your life into areas.
For example:
Love
Family
Home Life
Career
Physical Health
Mental Health
Money
Spiritual Development
Education/Intellectual Pursuits
Some areas may need no work at all, and your only vision for them is to maintain the level of happiness. Others may be at the core of your 3-year plan, to shift where you are now, to a much more satisfied place down the line.
Ask yourself a few questions, to help you develop a vision:
- What three main things would need to happen in the next three years to increase your fulfilment levels, to feel more content and happier and as if good progress has been made?
- Without thinking too much, write a quick list, but be specific, of what you want from your life. For example:
To be in a committed relationship
Own a pet
Change jobs
To feel more connected to your community
Have more family time
- Ask yourself how do you feel in life now (sad, anxious, unfulfilled), and compare that to how you feel in your vision (happy, content, accomplished). What will it take to get you to the emotional place you desire?
Remember there are no wrong answers here, this is a personal list to you. When you let yourself dream and believe, what do you truly want and need?
