Bridget Jones’s Baby

Bridget Jones's Baby Universal PicturesHelen Fielding (the writer of Bridget Jones), recently said “At heart Bridget Jones is about the gap between how we all feel we’re expected to be and how we actually are…” That quote really sums up in a nutshell why the books and films have been so popular – on some level we are all able to relate to Bridget Jones and the predicaments she finds herself in.

What we know so far…

The latest instalment is likely to be no different – its ten years on, and as Bridget says “Many positive things to note…”, she has a top job as a producer on a news programme, she has a cordial relationship with her ex (Mark Darcy), she’s got great friends, a good social life going to festivals amongst other things and oh yes – she’s pregnant!

The trailers give away the fact one of her exes is back – Mark Darcy played by Colin Firth, but there is a noticeable absence of Hugh Grant who played her other love interest in the previous films as Daniel Cleaver. But don’t worry there is a new lovable rogue to take his place in the form of Grey’s Anatomy’s McDreamy – Patrick Dempsey who plays billionaire Jack Qwant.

So, the story goes that Bridget is pregnant; she is just not sure who the father is – Mark or Jack! It maybe that in real life even
does not know who the father is, as three endings were filmed to keep the actors and crew guessing, with the film makers hoping to only reveal all at the premiere.

You can see from Renee’s quote just how much she has relished coming back to the character. “This is part of the new challenge, discovering where she is now in her new life. But as an actress, it feels like stepping back with an old friend. I love this character, I like that she tells stories about what it’s like to be a woman and these really relatable situations at certain times in life. It’s so right to tell a story about Bridget in this stage of her life.”

Bridget’s old friends are still there to be confided in: Shazza (played by Sally Phillips), Tom (played by James Callis) and Jude (played by Shirley Henderson). But as well as the new love interest some other famous names crop up in the film – singer Ed Sheeran (it looks like Bridget tries to chat him up in a bar) and beloved Emma Thompson who plays Bridget’s Doctor (Dr. Rawling) to hilarious effect.

The film is out in the UK on the 16th September 2016, which just leaves the question of who do you want the Daddy to be? #DefinatelyDarcy or #TotallyJack

Interestingly Bridget Jones’s Baby does not create in film the third novel in the series, of which many people are glad as in the book Firth’s character was killed off. Instead the movie is based on Helen Fielding’s newspaper columns that she wrote for The Independent in 2005.

Unusually the book – Bridget Jones’s Baby: The Diaries will actually be released after the film on 11th October 2016, just in time for the Christmas market; the diaries much like the film are supposed to chronicle the bumpy ride of motherhood for Bridget Jones.
