There are a variety of stories about how Father’s Day came into existence; I thought I would share one of them with you.
Father’s Day came about as a result of Sonora Smart listening to a Mother’s Day sermon.
Her father, William Smart was widowed, after his wife died giving birth to their sixth child. He raised all six children by himself, and as Sonora grew into an adult she realised the courage and selflessness it had taken her father.
Her father was born in June, and so she decided to celebrate the first Father’s Day on 19th June 1910.
In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge supported the idea of a national Father’s Day. Then later in 1926 The National Father’s Day Committee was formed in New York City.
A Joint Resolution of Congress recognised Father’s Day in 1956, and then President Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation in 1966 declaring the 3rd Sunday of June as Father’s Day.
President Richard Nixon signed a law making it permanent in 1972. And now Father’s Day is widely celebrated across the globe.
We hope you enjoy a great day with the important men in your life, why not treat them to a small gift to show your appreciation. See the image for a few suggestions.
