Tasseomancy or Tasseography

tea leaveasTasseomancy is the art of divining the future using tea leaves. This ancient art originated in China and then in the mid 1800’s spread to the Western world by nomadic gypsies.

The process consists of loose leaf tea such as Ceylon being poured into a cup and drunk by the person whose fortune is being read. When there is little more than a small mouthful left the cup is held in the left hand and the liquid is swirled three times in a clockwise motion. Then the cup is placed upside down on a saucer and the remaining liquid is poured out, the tea cup should be placed right side up with the handle facing towards you, the tea leaves that are to be read remain stuck to the inside of the cup including the rim, the sides and the bottom. If done correctly the formation of leaves should have providing patterns and symbols to be interpreted.

In addition to this process there are also many personal techniques and rituals that vary from psychic to psychic, as would be expected with such a traditional art. Some require a different shaking of the cup before the liquid is emptied out while others require a wish to be made while drinking the tea. A lot of these variations in technique stem from which culture the art has been passed down from.

Although the process sounds simple the actual reading of the tea is considerably more complex. Psychics doing the reading need to have strong abilities. This is because although the tea leaves form visual patterns a psychic sense is needed alongside good vision to accurately perform a reading.

The psychic readings from the tea leaves tend to be quite ‘present focused’ and will not often extend much further than a month into the future, with images near to the cups rim occurring sooner. The following are a few examples of symbols that may occur and give basic meanings; remember though that the overall meaning varies based on the combination of the symbols that occur.

Letters often signify the names of friends and relatives, whilst numbers provide spans of time. A triangle shape indicates good karma, a circle will provide success, hearts mean love and squares mean caution. A good example of a combination of symbols meaning something different is a triangle appearing with a heart, rather than good karma and love (their individual meanings), it could indicate jealousy.

An egg is a sign of a good omen and can put a positive spin on the readings overall meaning.

A coin is the symbol for coming wealth.

A fence represents being held back or minor set backs to a current event.

A hawk alone is also a symbol for jealousy.

A rabbit marks the need for courage or bravery to face something.

A horse shoe is a symbol of good luck.

The importance of the person drinking the tea is so that the leaves can sense the vibrations from the person’s aura. With this type of divination the shapes and patterns are a trigger for the reader’s intuition.
