Rune – a holy secret, a mystery that is whispered.
The runic alphabet, used by early Norse people including the Vikings, has no clear origin. The word rune derives from the Gothic word runa – meaning mystery. One of the names for a runic alphabet is Futhark, gaining its name like the word alphabet from the first few symbols in the series. Runes had no lowercase, and could be written in any direction, from left to right or right to left.
By 400 A.D. use of a common set of 24 runes had spread across northern Europe, based possibly on Greek and Latin origins. As time passed new runes were added on as the need arose, and various versions of the Futhark emerged. The fact that runes consisted of straight lines made them easier to carve into wood or stone.
Runes were never the basis of a spoken language, but in addition to their written use they were believed to be sacred and very powerful magical symbols, each linked to a god and a specific meaning. They were a means of divination. Rune casters, whom were often women, used runes to cast lots and tell fortunes. Modern versions include a blank rune, which symbolizes the unknowable.
As the use of the Latin alphabet spread throughout Europe, runes became less common and were eventually banned by the Church. However they survived in Scandinavia, especially Sweden, and have been revived by the modern New Age movement.
Rune readings still have a place today, opening the enquirers mind to possibilities, freeing the person from what they have been taught. In short Runes release the answer from within your unconscious mind.
There are variations on how runes can be read, here is one method:
In a reading the Querant is asked to pull a number of Rune tablets from a cloth bag and throw them (Cast the Lot) onto a cloth that is separated into the areas of Being, Thinking, Doing and Is. Some Runes will land face down these are called ‘hidden’ and like reversed Tarot cards have a different meaning to the face up stones, meanings also change depending on where on the cloth they land.
Telephone Rune readings are possible with the cast being made for the client by the Rune Mistress / Master. If you would like to try a Rune reading call:
